Election 2009 - And Beyond!
Nov 14, 2009 Posted by Janet Myhre Login and commentDear Members and Great Volunteers:
2009 results did not turn out the way we had work for, but that should not in any way reflect on the many great accomplishments and hard work that Mount Vernon District, Fairfax County and Virginian Democrats have achieved during the last several years….
After all – we did elect, a Democratic US Senator in 2006, moved the Virginia Senate body to a Democratic majority, elected and maintained a Democratic majority to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, continued with a favorable presence on the Fairfax County School Board, elected a new Democratic representative in the 11th Congressional District, elected our second Democratic US Senator, and supported the historic election of our Democratic 44th President, Barrack Obama.
As the 2009 Virginia election results bare out – we cannot rest on our victories, we must continue to reach out to voters, keep new voters engaged, and most of all help great candidates that may struggle as politicians. All that being said, here in Mt. Vernon you did have great successes, with the election of our own Delegate-Elect Scott Surovell to represent the 44th House of Delegate district in the great tradition of his predecessor, Delegate Kris Amundson. We retained our other great legislators, Delegate Vivian Watts, Delegate Mark Sickles and Delegate David Englin. A special thank you goes to Greg Werkheiser who worked hard to unseat the abuser fee author, Dave Albo in the 42nd House of Delegate race. While Greg was not successful in his venture, he and his campaign did not rest until they had knocked on everydoor, recruited every volunteer and presented the voters of the 42nd district a compelling candidate.
This is not done in a vacuum, volunteer and committee members play a vital role in keeping Democratic values strong in our community and our committee. Many grow weary of the endless political process in Virginia. “Didn’t we just have an election” crosses the minds of the voters (and especially committee members) and it is our mission, if you will, to make the civics of our great nation, not a burden but an honor. As our Secretary of State Hillary Clinton so aptly penned “it takes a village”.
With that in mind, Mt. Vernon District Democratic Committee has worked hard to make sure we have the infrastructure and processes in place that the work burden is smaller and can be done by many. In 2008 – 2009 we develop a plan, identified critical operational objectives and continue to improve our operation by focusing on supporting our many great candidates that over all kept the district Blue.
We have continued our ability to have a year in – year out presence with permanent tools such as a PO Box, portable committee telephone numbers, communication tools and website presence (http://www.mvdemocrats.com/). We supported candidates and campaigns through help in funding absentee voter outreach, printed material, candidate bumper stickers and signs. In 2008 the committee purchased over 4,000 Obama/Biden signs to be distributed throughout our neighborhoods. We provide venues and events for community members to meet and find out more about our Democratic candidates.
In 2010-2011 we will continue to build on more community involvement that goes beyond an election and creates issue and policy avenues for our electorate.
I look forward to continuing supporting the committee, our candidates and most of all the community. We will be honored to have you part of our village in 2010-2011.
