How many people live in Mt. Vernon?

According to the last estimate by Fairfax County in 2004, approximately 116,000 people live in the Mt. Vernon Magisterial District in approximately 44,000 households.

The Mount Vernon Magisterial District is forecast to be the largest Magisterial District in Fairfax County by 2010 with a population of 154,300.

How many registered voters are there in the Mt. Vernon Magisterial District?

Typically between 68,000 and 72,000 depending upon the presidential cycle.  Also, there has been substantial voter growth in the South County area which has driven up registered voter totals substantially over the last five years.

What is a magisterial district?

With the exception of the Board Chair, each Fairfax County Supervisor represents a magisterial district. 

The Mount Vernon Magisterial District is the second largest district in Fairfax County in land area comprising 60.76 square miles, 38,860 acres, and has the third lowest population density in Fairfax County. 

Is Mount Vernon a Democratic district?

The current configuration of the Mount Vernon Magisterial District typically votes Democratic overall.  Fairfax County as a whole has been trending Democratic as well.

Tim Kaine and Jim Webb carried all but one of Mt. Vernon's 26 precincts.  Kerry-Edwards carried 17 of 26 in 2004. 

Mt. Vernon does have three non-at-large Republican representatives: Cong. Tom Davis, Sen. Jay O'Brien, and Del. Dave Albo.
