At the last MVDDC meeting January 24, Janet Myhre was unanimously elected chair of the Mount Vernon District Democratic Committee (MVDDC) taking the gavel from Scott Surovell, who was recently elected to chair the Fairfax County Democratic Committee (FCDC). At the meeting, the executive committee presented Scott, who headed the committee for four years Scott with a tri-cornered colonial hat covered in campaign buttons (to remember his roots) and a gavel and copy of Roberts Rules of Order for his new position. At MVDDC, Scott had built a reputation as an energetic, strategic thinker who sifted through voter data to pinpoint target groups, developed tactics, and analysed results. He developed a committee of 71 members and an email list of 800 volunteers. Scott said he was glad to leave the committee with "good people on the executive committee who are ready to take over and a good balance in the bank." "In 2006, Fairfax County elected a Democratic senator, in 2007 we helped take the state senate for the Democrats, and in 2008 we will make Virginia a blue state in the Presidential election," he said.Mardi Gras 2008
Our first Mardi Gras Fundraiser and Straw Poll was a huge success with great food, decor, silent auction items, and participation by local Democratic leaders. Eleventh Congressional District candidates made presentations and were put to a vote in a straw poll. Leslie Byrne won with 52 percent followed by Doug Denneny with 22 percent, and Lori Alexander with 11 percent. Foutheen percent wrote in a candidate. Fairfax County Board of Supervisors' Chair Gerry Connolly, who is expected to file for that race next week, gave an opening speech. Hilary Clinton won the presidential straw poll with 54 percent against 44 percent for Barak Obama. Hilary supporters showed up in force along with more than 200 people from Northern Virginia and D.C. Rep. Jim Moran gave a pep talk and auctioned off a couple items including lunch with him in the U.S. Capitol for a gang of folks. See elsewhere on the web site for thanks to the many MVDDC members who pulled this first Mardi Gras together in record time. --photos by Cassie Arnold.2007 MVDDC Ice Cream Social
The Mount Vernon Democratic Committee Ice Cream Social is the committee Fall Campaign kickoff and primary event of the year. Gov. Mark Warner paid a surprise visit to this year's event. Together with the perfect weather, Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, and some excellent gospel music from Faithwalk, it was a terrific event.Lorton Fourth of July Parade
The parade has grown from a small event held in first held Gunston Plaza more than ten years ago, to a large community event that is now probably the largest 4th of July parade in Fairfax County. It ended at Lorton Station Town Center where a band played in the gazebo and tents housed community services and food vendors. Democrats Fairfax County Chair Gerry Connolly, Mount Vernon District Supervisor Gerry Hyland, State Sen. Toddy Puller, School Board Chair Dan Storck, Del. Mark Sickles and State Sen. Candidate George Barker. About 30 Democrats marched in support of the Democratic Candidates. Mount Vernon Democrats Chris Ambrose, Kate Wilder, Laura Sonnenmark, Janet Myhre, Linda Monk, Michael and Cassie Arnold, Mary Paden, Alan Salisbury, Robena Reid, Ron England, Greg Shuckman, and Sabi Usmani passed out water, U.S. flags, and literature to a receptive crowd of about 4,000 people. Monk, a constitutional scholar, pointed out that onlookers cheered when offered bottles of "Democratic water--good for your Constitution."MVDDC Spring Picnic - 2006
