November 4th - What a day!
Thursday, November 6, 2008(Mt. Vernon-South County District Democratic Committee)
Mt.
Vernon Democrats and
volunteers:
Ok - it has taken me several days to get my head around this election. The sleepless nights, the exhausting days, the exuberant celebration, the closing and sad farewell to our adopted campaign staff and campaign headquarters @ 8796 Sacramento Drive and then the realization that YES WE DID™! (see below).
I want to thank all of you for having the patience and the spirit that allowed us to support the election of President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden (we have got to get spell checker to accept Barack's name). But we went farther, we also supported the election of Governor Mark Warner to the United States Senate, the re-election of our 8th Congressional Representative James Moran, and the newly elected , 11th Congressional Representative, Congressman-elect Gerry Connolly. Mt. Vernon District is now fully supported by Professional Democratic Federal Elected Officials thanks to you! (see pss)
WoW!
Quite frankly - I felt a little useless on election day, I thought that I would be running around, putting out fires, coordinating with protect the vote attorneys, shutting down the Republican dirty tricks apparatus, keeping voters in long lines as the polls closed - but - nay a phone call, nay a long line, nay a problem all day! The reason for my lack of work goes deep into our organization with the new and old volunteers - but most importantly it goes to the excellent team we have in our Mt. Vernon District Democratic Committee.
Karen Stallings, Chris Ambrose and Sherry Dana - managed the precinct operations as a fine oiled machine. My deepest gratitude goes out to them.
Our
Precinct Captains and super volunteers showed
why we gave the campaign field organizers such
a hard time during planning stages! WE
CAN HANDLE IT!

And all the many many volunteers from near an afar who found a way to help by canvassing, phone banking, donating their furniture and materials, preparing food and offering their homes as a resting place for our campaign team, staffing the polls on Election Day. We are the movement - let's keep it going!
One of our own - has a letter to the editor in today's Washington Post
On Election Day, I volunteered at our local precinct, handing out sample ballots and thanking people for braving the long lines.
When a charming older African American woman approached, I asked whether she wanted a sample ballot. She said yes and took it from me. Then she asked me what to do next: "This is the first time I have ever voted, you see."
She said this in a matter-of-fact tone, but my reaction of obvious surprise moved her to say, "I was too young to vote for Kennedy, and he was the only other person who I wanted to vote for until now."
We gave her the basic instructions, and she got in line. A half-hour later she emerged, smiling, with her "I voted" sticker affixed to her coat.

1. John Harris and Laura Sonnenmark
were critical in organizing and staffing this

Analytical MVDDC precinct results will be posted on the website in the next day - In the meantime - visit State Board of Elections - Virginia or Fairfax County - Election Results 2008* Don't forget - we had double the absentee ballots this year as compared to 2004 5,755 - 12,356. Absentee ballots are posted to a central precinct county wide according to Congressional district.
p.s.s. - Scott just sent me a little email..
I was raised in the Mount Vernon area of Fairfax County. My old neighborhood still looks the same. Same houses, same ball fields. But on recent election days my old neighborhood hasn't been voting for my political party. It's time to change that. So next year I'm going to start in my old neighborhood. I'm going to walk down Wagon Wheel Road* where we moved in 1962 and talk to the voters there. And then I'm going to spend time in my old neighborhood in Virginia Beach where Maureen and I lived for 21 years, raised our 5 children, and got our start in politics. I'm going to talk to the voters there. And I'm going to talk about our positive reform plan with the voters of Prince William, Loudoun, Henrico, Roanoke, Danville, Winchester and every community in Virginia. The time is now for Republicans to start a new conversation with all the citizens of our New Dominion. - Signed Bob McDonnell.
*Whitman Precinct - IT HAS STARTED!
