Bio
Jim Moran represents Northern Virginia's 8th District – Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church and Reston -- in the United States House of Representatives. A member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, he serves on the Defense and Interior Subcommittees, co-chairs the Congressional Prevention Caucus, leads the Task Force on Sovereign Wealth Funds and was an original co-founder of the New Democratic Coalition.
An outspoken advocate against the misguided mission in Iraq, Jim voted against the war from the beginning, even co-authoring the Democratic alternative that would have prevented it. Since then he has helped lead the charge in the House to bring our troops home.
With over thirty years
experience as a public servant and
community activist, Jim Moran has never stopped
working for Northern Virginia.
His political career began in 1979 when he was
elected to the Alexandria City
Council. Jim became the Vice-Mayor three years
later and served in that capacity
until 1985, when he was elected Mayor. His
first run for Congress was
successful, joining the House of
Representatives in 1990.
Jim Moran is a
graduate of Holy Cross, where he majored in
economics. He went on to earn his
masters degree in Public Administration from
the University of Pittsburgh in
1970. Before running for public office he
worked at the Department of Health,
Education and the Workforce (HEW) and also
served as a committee staffer for the
Senate Appropriations Committee.
