Wow! Wow! Wow!
What an absolutely great 1st Mardi Gras Party. The venue, the supporters, the elected representatives, the candidates, and last but not least the FOOD was spectacular. Final numbers are not in but we had over 200 attendees.
Thank you to all of our elected officials and candidates that attended this evening’s event: VA Senators Toddy Puller, George Barker, Creigh Deeds (candidate for Governor), and Patsy Ticer. Delegates Kris Amundson, Mark Sickles and Brian Moran (candidate for Governor). Fairfax County Board of Supervisors chair, Gerry Connelly and Fairfax School Board chair, Dan Storck. The current (and we hear more to come) 11th Congressional Candidates, Lori Alexander, Leslie Byrne and Doug Denneny. A special treat was Congressmen Jim Moran’s visit. Who knew he could have a second career path as an auctioneer?
I cannot thank all the volunteers enough, but let me point out the crew that went above and beyond, like they always do.
First off “give it up” for Laura Sonnenmark and her husband Les. Laura got this event running from start to finish as it was hatched in the mind of our past chair Scott Surovell just a little over a month ago (watch out FCDC he’s gonna make you work!) She worked tirelessly coordinating every part of the event to make it come together this evening. I really hope each and every member takes the time to thank Laura and Les, because they continue to organize and contribute long hours and resources creating events for us that are just phenomenal (PS – Les made the king cake).
Our silent auction team of Karen Stallings (and George), Jeanne O’Hara and solicitor extraordinaire, Sherry Dana, really brought together a great variety of silent auction items for tonight’s events. Please remember to visit the EVENT section of www.mvdemocrats.com to see all the contributors.
Our location / décor team of Erica Karolewski, Dawn Drennen, and Alan Salisbury once again ensure that the event and venue were perfect. Also a big thank you to the team at the Riverside Apartments which coordinated with their resident, Erica, allowing us to use the brand new facility,
Food was contributed by many members, but a special thank you goes to Kate Wilder for her time and resources in bringing us true Cajun / Mardi gras fare. Yummy!
Mary Paden, MVDDC, secretary and communications chair was critical in spreading the word and really getting the event out there to the community. She will have a more detailed communication with pictures about the event in a few days.
Oh and by the way – Hillary won the Presidential straw poll and Leslie Byrne won the 11th Congressional poll.

Oops - How could I forget.
A special thank you to Mt. Vernon's past chair, Scott Surovell for his MC of the event. I have designated him as "MVDDC - MC Emeritus".
His depth of knowledge and statistically recall will take me a little bit of time to catch up - but I think he will always be there to whisper in my ear.
